DIY Magnet Board for Your Travel Bucket List

DIY-Vacation-Board-1

My husband and I LOVE to travel. But, like everyone else, we have neither the funds nor the time to do it all at once. As a little “surprise” present one year, I made this board so we could keep track of “the places we need to see and the things we need to do.” It’s a customizable, moveable, travel bucket list that you can easily make at home. (If you have kids it would be a fun way for them to write down where they want to go.)

In this post, I’ll show you how to make it…

DIY-Vacation-Board-2

Supplies Needed:

supplies

  • a small dry erase board :: you can find these almost anywhere: office supply stores, craft stores, amazon.com, etc.
  • a dry erase pen :: you’ll need this to check boxes and add your info
  • Avery Inkjet Magnet Sheets :: available at office supply stores or online
  • an inkjet printer
  • scissors or a paper trimmer

Instructions ::

  1. Download the free printable template here: DIY Vacation Board
  2. Open the PDF, then print it on an 8.5″ x 11″ magnet sheet. Let dry for a few minutes to make sure the ink doesn’t smudge.
  3. Trim the pieces. I recommend: a) using a paper trimmer if you have one, and b) trimming the table in rows instead of cells. This will make things a lot easier.
  4. Arrange the pieces on the board, then write your info with the dry erase pen. (You can also make your own table in Microsoft Word if you prefer a more professional look. :)
  5. Optional :: I used the extra space on the magnet sheet to print out some vacation photos. If you don’t use them on the board, you’ll have extra magnets!

Since the sheet is magnetic, you can easily move rows around allowing you to prioritize or re-organize your list. (Our list, for instance, is organized by cost.)

Ta da! A fun, easy-to-make interactive travel board. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below.

The Unofficial Paper Source Color Guide

Paper Source Pantone CMYK RGB Color Guide

The Unofficial Paper Source Color Guide

After scouring the web for the closest Pantone match to Paper Source’s aubergine, I gave up and decided to figure it out on my own. I read various blog posts about this (namely on Wedding Bee boards), and people mentioned contacting customer service and being told the following:

“Unfortunately, we do not have the RGB code for the colors…The colors that we carry are our custom colors, therefore there is no exact match in the RGB or Pantone color charts.”

Now I understand. There really AREN’T any perfect Pantone matches to Paper Source’s lovely array of colors. Color matching is, and always will be, a complicated and subjective process. That said, I did my best to come up with a color guide that can serve as a starting point for your exploration. (I say “starting point” because that’s exactly what it should be. Start with a combination I suggest, then adjust according to your printer, paper, and monitor.)

In the printable 8.5″ x 11″ guide, I have provided the Paper Source color name along with its coordinating RGB, CMYK, Hex/HTML, and Pantone numbers.

Paper Source Pantone CMYK RGB Color Guide

My Color Matching Method and a Bunch of Disclaimers

To create the guide, I opened all the windows and let in as much natural light as possible. I then used the most up-to-date Paper Source Color & Shape Guide to match up to my Pantone Color Bridge Uncoated swatches. Some colors really didn’t have a “match” at all, so I matched them with the closest thing I could find. Keep in mind that the less color you use, the closer it will appear to your Paper Source paper. In other words, if you print some skinny colored text on a white card stock invitation and stuff it into a coordinating envelope, people would hardly notice they weren’t the same exact color. BUT if you decide to color block your entire invite with Clover, chances are it’s going to look different when it’s next to your Clover envelope.

Disclaimers:

  1. This guide offers suggestions for colors that are CLOSE to Paper Source’s (and Waste Not Paper’s) 2012 collection. These are NOT exact matches by any means.
  2. I created this guide with my eyes, my studio light, and my computer monitor. Obviously, all of these factors will change when you use it. So, I suggest starting with a combination I provide, then adjusting little by little with your printer and/or monitor until you’re satisfied.
*If your printer is requesting an exact Pantone for the ink, I recommend mailing them the paper you want to match. You can say, “It’s close to Pantone XXX, but please match it to the paper I provide.” A GOOD printer will allow you to see a sample of the color on your invitation and ask for approval before printing everything.
  3. This guide is completely unofficial. I’m providing it because I think it will be helpful to a lot of people. I am affiliated with Paper Source in no way whatsoever (other than being a big fan).
  4. Please note that the paper wasp mark is a trademark of Paper Source.

Thanks and happy color matching!

P.S. If you feel like you’ve come up with a better match for one (or more) of the colors, please share!
