DIY Valentines for Snail Mail Lovers

DIY Valentines for Snail Mail Lovers | prettypeas.com

Hello, February!

To celebrate the re-opening of our shop, I designed a new, limited-edition “Love Letters” stamp set with this DIY Valentine in mind. With three simple cuts, you can create a mailbox that really opens!

Instructions for Stamp Set:

  1. Cut your sheet of card stock into 4 pieces, each 4.25″ x 5.5″. (Or, use pre-made blank cards like these.)
  2. Using a high quality stamp pad, stamp your mailbox onto one of your sheets of paper, then cut it out. Make 3 slits in the mailbox door: left side, top, and right side. (Hint: an X-Acto knife and cutting mat make this much easier!)
  3. Glue the mailbox onto the card. (Don’t glue down the door!)
  4. Stamp your mini envelopes onto a separate piece of paper (or label paper, if you have it), then cut them out. Since each envelope is different, you can use a unique color for each one if you have multiple stamp pads.
  5. Glue or stick the mini envelopes onto your card.
  6. OPTIONAL: hole-punch hearts and glue ’em on, or add tiny white dots with your gel pen.
  7. Write a personal note on the back and mail to someone you love!

Instructions for Printable:

Note :: Each 8.5″ x 11″ sheet fits 8 mailboxes plus 1 jumbo (BONUS!) mailbox. Cut out as many as you need. Make 3 slits in each mailbox door: left side, top, and right side. (Hint: an X-Acto knife and cutting mat make this much easier!)
  3. Glue the mailbox onto the card. (Don’t glue down the door!)
  4. Print the second page of the PDF—the one with the envelopes—onto a separate piece of paper (or label paper, if you have it), then cut out as many as you wantNote :: Each 8.5″ x 11″ sheet fits 56 mini envelopes and 6 jumbo envelopes.

Supplies Needed:

  • Envelope Liner PDF (download above)
  • A printer
  • Matte photo paper or text-weight paper (1 8.5″ x 11″ sheet per liner)
  • Envelope Liner Templates to match your envelope (my favorites are from Paper Source)
  • Scissors
  • Double-Sided Tape

As always, these printables are free for personal use only and may not be redistributed, copied, or sold. Please share the project with a link to this post. Tag us on Instagram with @prettypeaspaperie, #prettypeaspaperie.

Assembly is easy-peasy, but here are some notes:

1. Print the liner of your choice on a sheet of matte photo paper or text-weight paper. (Super thick paper won’t fold very well.) Use your high quality (or photo quality) print setting for best results. Note :: Each 8.5″ x 11″ sheet fits 1 liner.

2. Using pencil, lightly trace around your envelope liner template.

3. Cut out the envelope liner.

4. Slide the liner inside the envelope and place it where you want it. Fold your envelope to crease the liner. NOW, remove the liner and put a small piece of double-sided tape near the top of it (on the back, of course). Slide the liner back in, make sure it’s placed correctly, then stick it! (I don’t recommend putting tape on the bottom portion of the liner because it will crinkle when you fold the envelope. A single piece of tape allows the liner to move a bit as the envelope is closed and sealed.)

Stick around because I’m about to post a GIVEAWAY!

Free Printable | Modern Cactus-Themed Valentine’s Day Cards

Free Printable | Modern Cactus-Themed Valentine's Day Cards by Pretty Peas Paperie

Can you believe February is right around the corner?! Plan ahead for Valentine’s Day this year with my cactus cards!

If you follow Akula Kreative (my design studio) on Instagram, you might recognize the prickly plants from several posts back. “Draw cacti” had been on my Do-When-You-Have-Time List for months until I fiiinally had a chance over Christmas to make it happen. Originally, I wanted to use the cactus pattern to make custom fabric for our house—which I still might do—but for now, they work perfectly for printable cards.

These small cards are super easy to make: just print, cut, and fold! They fit inside a standard A2 envelope and measure about 4″ x  5.125″ when folded. The best part is, you have two versions of each design to choose from: one is fully designed and ready to go (top row in the photo below), and the other is plain and ready for stamping (bottom row in the photo below).

Free Printable | "I love [cact]us." Valentine's Day Card by Pretty Peas Paperie

Assembly is pretty self-explanatory, but here are some notes:

1. Print the PDF on a sheet of matte photo paper or card stock. Use your high quality (or photo quality) print setting for best results. Note :: Each 8.5″ x 11″ sheet fits 2 cards. The PDF is composed of 3 pages: page 1 is “I love [cact]us,” page 2 is “chicks before pricks,” and page 3 is “let’s cuddle.”

2. Using the solid trim lines on the PDF, cut out your cards. If you plan on stamping, I recommend doing that before folding.

3. On the samples, I used Paper Source text weight paper in Luxe Blush and stamped with a Versafine ink pad. (Remember that the more textured your paper is, the harder it will be for detail to come through. Luxe blush paper has a textured, cotton-like finish, so if you use that you might notice some loss in detail with your stamps.)

I had SO much fun making these…from the hand-lettered cactus puns to the limited edition stamp set! Oh, and speaking of stamps, I only made a handful of these cactus cuties so you better grab ’em while you can. The set of 3 is $50 and comes with a BONUS stamp! Click here to shop the Etsy Pop-Up.

Have fun and hope you enjoy my cacti!

Free Printable “Musu-Bi Mine” Mini [Modern] Valentines

Free Printable | "Musubi Mine" Mini Valentine

Spam musubiThis year’s Valentines printable is a modern take on one of my favorite childhood snacks :: Spam musubi (pronounced “MOO-soo-bee” – not “moo-SOObee,” Andrew Zimmern). If you’re unfamiliar, Spam musubi is a beloved Hawaiian snack made of nori (seaweed), rice, and spam. In my family, musubi is a coveted staple brought to holiday potlucks and birthday parties. The second it gets set down on a table, you can expect it to disappear within ten minutes. Mmmm.

Happy Valentine’s Day, fellow Pacific Islanders!

These miniature cards are a breeze to make: just print, cut, and fold! They fit perfectly in a coin envelope and sit nicely atop a fresh musubi.

Supplies Needed:

Optional:

1. To make the mini Valentines, simply print the PDF on a sheet of matte photo paper or card stock. Use your high quality (or photo quality) print setting for best results. Note :: Each 8.5″ x 11″ sheet fits 6 cards; each folded card measures 2″ x 3.5″.

2. Using the marks on the PDF, trim your cards. Each flat card measures 4″ wide by 3.5″ tall.

3. Fold each card in half.

4. If you want to give the card some texture, use glitter glue to mimic grains of rice.

5. Let dry and stick in a coin envelope. I used glassine envelopes because they remind me of rice paper. :) Seal with washi tape or a sticker.

DIY Watercolored Cactus Paper Sculpture

DIY Watercolor Cactus Paper Sculpture | Tutorial

Inspired by our new spineless prickly pear cactus, I decided to try to make a mini paper version for my desk. My watercolor work isn’t the best, but overall it’s pretty darn cute. The bonus :: it requires no sun and water!

DIY Watercolor Cactus Paper Sculpture | Tutorial

Supplies Needed:

  • Printable PDF | Cactus and Pot Templates (click to download)
  • A printer
  • 1 Sheet of 8.5″ x 11″ watercolor paper
  • Watercolors, paintbrush, paper towel, and water cup
  • 2 Sheets of 8.5″ x 11″ card stock (you choose the colors/patterns)
  • Scissors
  • Foam tape (I used 10+ Scotch Foam Mounting Squares)
  • Craft glue
  • Double-stick tape
  • Scotch tape (optional)
  • Mini or full-size popsicle stick (optional)
  • A cup of rice

DIY Watercolor Cactus Paper Sculpture | Tutorial

1. Download the PDFs. Print sheet 1 on watercolor paper. (You can also print it on cactus-colored card stock if you don’t feel like painting.) Print sheets 2 and 3 on the pieces of card stock you picked out for the exterior and interior of the pot.

DIY Watercolor Cactus Paper Sculpture | Tutorial

2. Watercolor your cactus pieces, then let the sheet dry. Cut everything out, then do a mock-up of the layered pieces. For example: on top of section D, place D-1, then D-2. Use the diagram up there on the right if it helps.

DIY Watercolor Cactus Paper Sculpture | Tutorial

3. Tape the pieces to the main cactus using foam squares. The top pieces are pretty small, so you may have to trim the foam tape a bit.

DIY Watercolor Cactus Paper Sculpture | Tutorial

4. For extra stability, glue a popsicle stick (or card stock remnant) to the bottom of the back of your cactus. Make sure the length of the stick that “pokes out” will fit inside the pot.

DIY Watercolor Cactus Paper Sculpture | Tutorial

5. Time to make the pot! This may seem complicated, but it will make sense when you’re doing it. Note: SOLID lines mean CUT and DOTTED lines mean FOLD. Cut out the main pot from sheet 2 (left image above), then cut the slits as indicated by the solid lines. Complete all of your folds until this piece looks like the right image above. Fold up the sides so you can clearly see the hexagonal bottom. Apply a small amount of craft glue in the triangular sections and connect all of the sides. On the inside of your pot, you should now have 6 “flaps” that need to get out of the way. Use tape or glue to flatten them against the side walls. (See image below.)

DIY-Watercolor-Paper-Sculpture-Cactus-11

Next, cut out the pot “interior” from your other sheet of card stock. Fold up the walls so you have a hexagonal bottom. Now, place this piece INSIDE the main pot. (It might take some finagling to get it in there.) Secure the two pieces together with double-stick tape.

DIY Hexagonal Box Paper Sculpture | Tutorial

Yay! Now you have a paper pot.

DIY Watercolor Cactus Paper Sculpture | Tutorial

6. Fill the pot with rice, beans, beads, pebbles, or anything else you have on hand…then add your cactus!

I did some watercolor touch up once everything was assembled, then bent some of the segments to give it dimension.

Place your new paper succulent on your desk or give one to a family member or co-worker. :)
