How to Make an EASY, No-Carve, Mini Minion Pumpkin

Make an EASY, no-carve Minion pumpkin in just a few steps: paint the head (whole pumpkin), hair (stem), eye, and mouth, then glue elastic trim to the lid of a favor tin or jar. You'll save tons of time by choosing a small pumpkin and only decorating the head. :) We don't have kids yet, but I LOVE animated films. Every time we walk out of the theater I have to pretend that the sad scene didn't just almost make me cry. (Remember the "Married Life" montage in UP? Yeah...)

Anyway, if you don't feel like carving anything this year, delight your neighbors with some mini Minion pumpkin heads!

Supplies Needed:

  • A small pumpkin
  • Acrylic or craft paint in yellow, black, and white. Optional: brown (I didn't have brown paint, so I mixed black, white, gold, and red.) *If you want to speed up the process, get a small can of yellow spray paint.
  • Paintbrushes
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue or a hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Black elastic trim (available in the ribbon or fabric aisle at craft stores)
  • A small favor tin, jar lid, pie plate, or cardboard and tin foil (see step 6)

  1. Paint the entire pumpkin yellow. It took me about 5 coats to properly cover the orange, so if you don't have that kind of time, I recommend using spray paint or a super opaque yellow.
  2. Paint the stem black for the hair. (I've seen a lot of people use black pipe cleaner for hair, too.)
  3. Paint a white circle for the eye. (I traced around my favor tin to get the right size.)
  4. After the white is dry, paint the iris, then the pupil.
  5. Paint the mouth.
  6. To make the goggle, I used the lid of a favor tin I had stored in a box labeled Someday I will find a use for this stuff. If you don't have a favor tin lying around, you can use a jar lid (the kind that separates into two pieces). You can also cut a circle out of a pie plate or make a goggle out of cardboard and tin foil. Get creative! After measuring the circumference of your pumpkin, cut a piece of black elastic trim and glue the ends to your goggle. Slide the goggle around your minion head and you're done!

Hope you have fun decorating your pumpkins! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

How I Turned My Instagram Photos into Business Cards

How I Turned My Instagram Photos into Business Cards

Makers and Instagram Lovers, rejoice! If you don't know about Moo's Printfinity, you're missing out. Moo offers beautiful, affordable business cards with an incredible format for showcasing creative work.

Printfinity is a business card format in which you can print up to 50 unique images on the backs of your business cards. It's perfect for photographers, artists, and makers who want to share a body of work.

First, you choose your business card size. Then, you choose your design option.

To design your own using Moo's layouts and editing tool, click "Make."

To upload your complete design in .gif, .png, .jpg, or .pdf format, click "Upload." (See top left card above for the design I uploaded.)

On the front, you lay out your contact info. (This stays the same for your entire pack.) On the back, you can upload up to FIFTY (50!) different images.

If you post regularly to Instagram, then guess already have a portfolio! All you have to do is save the images at the highest resolution to your computer, then upload them to Moo. (I use the somewhat archaic method of emailing myself 2-3 photos at a time because my phone is old.)

Here's what I love about these business cards:

  1. THE FORMAT. • I have the opportunity to highlight new designs and give customers ideas for how to use my products. (The more useful your business card is, the more likely someone is to keep it.) • I can capture the variety of products I make and share my process. • My pack of cards doubles as a mini, portable portfolio.
  2. THE QUALITY. • Paper selection is minimal—you can only choose between "Moo Original Paper" and "Moo Green Paper"—but it's nice. (I work with a LOT of expensive paper, and I honestly really like this stuff. Even the recycled "Green" option is great. It's smooth, with enough weight to give it that high quality feel.) • Moo does a fine job with the digital printing. My images came out clean and crisp.
  3. THE PRICE. • Moo business cards start at $19.99 for 50 cards ($0.40 each). It's not the cheapest option around, but it's affordable. It's all about finding the best quality at the best price for your brand and the products/services you sell.

Give customers a reason to hold on to your card and look forward to their next purchase! You can even start a frenzy and encourage them to Collect Them All!

Moo is offering 25% off EVERYTHING until tonight. (That's why I'm writing this post now. BTW, I haven't been paid to say this. I just really like their product and want to share it with you because it's a great resource for creatives.)

If you miss the sale, you can use my referral discount of 10% below. (Pssst. You can save more if you sign up for their email list and wait for a bigger discount!)

Shop our rubber stamp collection at Renegade Craft Fair Austin! May 16-17, 2015 | Pretty Peas Paperie I just realized I hadn't made an official announcement about this yet...

I know people are getting antsy about the next Pop-Up Stamp Shop, so I'm excited to say we'll be selling at Renegade Craft Fair Austin May 16 and 17! This is the first time EVER you'll be able to shop our rubber stamps in person, AND we'll be debuting a ton of new designs—including the critters you see above.

WHERE is Renegade Craft Fair Austin?

Fair Market (in east Austin) | 1100 East 5th Street, Austin, TX

WHEN is Renegade, exactly?

Saturday, May 16 and Sunday May 17 (2015) from 11:00am to 6:00pm

Do I have to pay to attend?

Nope! Renegade is free to attend.

I live outside of Texas. Will I be able to order online?

Yes! We will open our online Pop-Up the week of Renegade and ship orders worldwide. To be notified of our opening, please sign up for our email list here.

Are there any perks to buying stamps in person?

You bet! We'll have a bunch of stamps out so you can try 'em before you buy 'em. We'll also be selling stamps at lower prices at the Fair (close to the same prices members will pay online). We may even do a giveaway or two at the table. Look for us on the map under Pretty Peas Paperie (booth 44).

Can I order a CUSTOM STAMP at Renegade?

Yes! We will have order forms for custom orders. Stamps will take the usual 2 weeks or so to make, then we'll make them available for pick-up at CRAFT (at which point we will email you). If you prefer the stamp(s) to be shipped to you, we'll charge you a small fee to cover postage.

How can I see the new designs you'll be debuting at the Fair?

We'll show a sneak peek here and there...if you're interested, please follow this blog (specifically, the Rubber Stamping category) or our Instagram account.

Who else will be selling goods at Renegade?

I am SO excited about all of the participants this year. Check out the Austin roster here!

This is where your money will go!

The Big & Little Animal Rescue Ranch | Website Preview In case you didn't know, I have a very specific goal in life :: to build a small ranch for animal rescues. The plan (as of now) is to provide a HAPPY, temporary shelter for dogs in need of homes. Of course, we'll have some full-time residents, too—hopefully to include a few goats, a couple donkeys, and maybe a pig.

How am I going to make this happen? Well, I'm not sure yet. But I AM saving for it. Every penny that isn't spent on the operating expenses of Akula Kreative and Pretty Peas Paperie will go into the Ranch Fund. I also have an awesome family that's on board with this idea and can't wait to have a family ranch. (The bulk of the Ranch Fund will most likely come from their combined business successes, but I HOPE to be able to offer up a meaningful sum.) Regardless, I'll be in charge of the branding.

What's my point? I'm telling you that you can feel GOOD when you support my biz. :) If you follow me long enough, you can expect an invitation to the opening. For now, you can visit our temporary landing page at!

There's something you should know :: YOU are LOVED. I lost a good friend this month, and this is what I would say if I had one extra minute with her.

Cheers to small businesses everywhere! by Akula Kreative [pinit]

This is my first attempt at gilding with a rubber stamp. It's full of flaws (and somewhat illegible) buuut...isn't it kind of beautiful? One of my favorite things about running a small biz is having the opportunity to learn something new EVERY day. I never would have pushed myself this hard in any of my previous jobs.

Stay tuned for a foil-stamping with rubber stamps tutorial once I figure out what I'm doing. Cheers to small business and creating a beautiful mess!

Introducing...Wood-Mounted Stamps with Handles!

Made with love in Austin, Texas // Pretty Peas Paperie Happy Thursday, folks! I'd like to introduce you to my new friend :: Mr. Wood-Wounted, Red Rubber Stamp (with a handle!). Though we'll continue to focus on clear rubber stamps, I decided it was time to branch out. Just a little. When packaging orders, I've found that having to use two hands to stamp "DO NOT BEND" slows the fulfillment process. Don't get me wrong...a perfectly-placed impression on, let's say, a business card, is totally worth the time. Some projects, on the other hand, just need to get done. Plus, there's something supremely satisfying about slamming a "PAID" stamp onto invoices. :)

Above, you'll see a sample of the new wood-mounted stamp, along with one of my new FAVORITE stamp pads. Both will be available for purchase during our next shop, so click HERE to find out how not to miss it!

Free Printable "Musu-Bi Mine" Mini [Modern] Valentines

Free Printable | "Musubi Mine" Mini Valentine Spam musubiThis year's Valentines printable is a modern take on one of my favorite childhood snacks :: Spam musubi (pronounced "MOO-soo-bee" - not "moo-SOObee," Andrew Zimmern). If you're unfamiliar, Spam musubi is a beloved Hawaiian snack made of nori (seaweed), rice, and spam. In my family, musubi is a coveted staple brought to holiday potlucks and birthday parties. The second it gets set down on a table, you can expect it to disappear within ten minutes. Mmmm.

Happy Valentine's Day, fellow Pacific Islanders!

These miniature cards are a breeze to make: just print, cut, and fold! They fit perfectly in a coin envelope and sit nicely atop a fresh musubi.

Supplies Needed:

Free Printable | "Musubi Mine Valentine"

1. To make the mini Valentines, simply print the PDF on a sheet of matte photo paper or card stock. Use your high quality (or photo quality) print setting for best results. Note :: Each 8.5" x 11" sheet fits 6 cards; each folded card measures 2" x 3.5".

2. Using the marks on the PDF, trim your cards. Each flat card measures 4" wide by 3.5" tall.

3. Fold each card in half.

4. If you want to give the card some texture, use glitter glue to mimic grains of rice.

5. Let dry and stick in a coin envelope. I used glassine envelopes because they remind me of rice paper. :) Seal with washi tape or a sticker.

As always, these are FREE for personal use only and may not be copied, redistributed, or sold.

Free Printable Seahawks and Patriots Cupcake Toppers | Super Bowl XLIX

The Super Bowl is upon us! These cupcake toppers have been quite a hit on Pinterest, so I've created a new PDF for all you New England fans.

Supplies Needed:

The directions are pretty self-explanatory, but you basically download, print, cut, glue/tape. To attach the “foam fingers” to the toothpicks, I just used a small strip of tape on the back.

To see more of the toppers in action, check out last year's post HERE.

As always, these are FREE for personal use only and may not be copied, redistributed, or sold.

Happy beer drinking and nacho eating!

Custom Lego Portraits

Custom Lego Portraits by Akula Kreative (Nikki Mihalik) Just sharing something fun...

Christmas of 2014 was all about LEGOS. For our Lego-fanatic friends (and family members), I designed custom portraits specific to their hair styles, hobbies, and wardrobes. Our Christmas postcard is below:

Custom Lego Christmas Card by Akula Kreative

Custom Lego Christmas Card by Akula Kreative

The portraits took quite a while to customize, but they were well worth it! On Christmas Eve, I heard my little cousin (a toddler) yell "LEGOOO MOVIE!!!" as he pointed to our card hanging on my aunt's wall. :)

DIY Giant Felt Tassel Garland

DIY Giant *Felt* Tassel Garland. Easy, inexpensive, durable, and reusable!

We have a huge space of blank wall above the family room TV, and it's always bugged me that it looks bare. Sooo...I bought a bunch of felt sheets and made giant tassels! Our room is much more festive now and I love it.

The photo instructions above should be pretty self-explanatory, but here are the details:

Supplies Needed:

  • 9" x 12" felt sheets (available at your local crafts store for around $0.30 each) / From tassel-to-tassel, my garland measures about 5 feet long and includes 22 tassels.
  • Scissors (super sharp sewing scissors work best)
  • Yarn, twine, or string / This garland is pretty heavy, so be sure to tie it to something strong and secure.

  1. With your felt sheet in a "landscape" orientation (long sides on the top and bottom), fold your felt sheet in half so that the fold is vertical. Make 12 vertical cuts about 0.5" apart from the bottom to 1" to 2" from the top. After cutting, your sheet should look like fringe. Don't worry about making perfect cuts - imperfections won't be very noticeable.
  2. Roll the sheet tightly, holding onto space you left along the top edge.
  3. Wrap a piece of yarn (12" to 15" long) a few times around the top, then tie in a double knot. Leave the ends long so you can use them to tie the tassel to the banner string.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 until you have the desired number of tassels.
  5. Tie each tassel to the banner string with a double or triple knot.

What I love about this garland:

  • It's super easy to make. The pre-cut felt sheets save so much time!
  • Felt is much more durable than tissue paper, so not only is cutting easier, but this will last longer and be easy to re-use.
  • It's ok if it gets a little wet. I don't recommend leaving this in the rain, but if it gets splashed here and there it's not a problem.
  • The tassels can be removed and repositioned, allowing you to switch up designs.

Happy New Year!
